Suomeksi

Shear enthusiasm towards adventure racing is what brought this team together. Our goal as a team is to take part in different types of adventure races in Finland and abroad. All of us are normal people with normal jobs. Beside that we commit ourselfs to training. We balance between family, training, work and social life. We also try to encourage people to take interest in aventure racing in all of its different forms.
Our team consists of Tuomas Sovijärvi, Mikko Kolehmainen, Tommi Laitervo, Liisa Paakkanen, Kati Vehmas and Timo Autto. You can get to know us better from our bios.

The race started with a fast bike section that was led by Adidas Terrex who completed the 75km under 2h30min. At this point the teams were just minutes from each other. Team Ulkoilun Maailma arrived about 15min later in 10th place. From CP1 to CP2 was a kayaking section over 27km of open water. From CP2 to CP3 was a 10km portaging section that took about 5h. Team UM was held up at CP3 by the dark zone rule because the winds were picking up and it was not safe to paddle anymore. They got a 13h rest. From CP1 to CP5 was 85km and it took the team about 8h30min. At CP5 they had food bags waiting before the 76km trek.

Christi and Pavel arrived safe and sound. Only thing that was missing were Pavel’s luggage. So the last few days included waiting for the luggage, buying food and getting tested for climbing and kayaking. The last message from Punta Arenas was that the team was in good mood and feeling strong. A clear and windy night set the teams off for the race.
The map has been revealed. There’s 19 check points (CP’s) and every one of them has a cut off time. We don’t know what the cut off times are. First leg is a 75km bike on roads towards south (Start - CP1).

77 days until Patagonia
The local weather and landscape is quite unique. Most of the mountain biking (MTB), if not all, is going to be on the Chilean part of Tierra Del Fuego. The land is mostly flat so winds will be quite strong. And when it’s windy in Patagonia, it really blows. Most of Tierra Del Fuego is pampa without trees. But then there are some persistent individuals that fight the harsh winds.

80 days until Patagoni
For a big adventure race like this it takes a bit more than just registering and booking flights. Apart from physical training there is a long list of things to be done before the start. Race organization demands papers to be filled. All the gear needs to be tested, fitted and tuned before packing. The logistics for 4 people + 4 bikes + 8 Big bags needs to be optimized.

88 days. That’s how long we have to wait until the start of the competition.
This is the start of a series of stories around and about our team’s preparation towards the adventure race in Patagonia, Chile. The race is scheduled 14.2. – 22.2.2012. We constantly face the question “what is adventure racing?” With this series we hope to give you a better picture what we are going to do in Patagonia.

Since May of 2011 we have been thinking about strengthtening our Team. Just before The Apex adventure race Tommi had problems with his knees and Liisa came down with a major flu. We want to be more prepared for possible injuries or other obstacles that might come to our path. We also want to be able to participate in national races with more than just 1 team.
